Did you know? The mortar is the bowl and the pestle is the grinding tool.
Place your ingredients into the mortar, make sure you don’t over fill it as it will be difficult to grind. We recommend filling it no more than one third. If you have a lot of ingredients to grind, process them in batches.
Holding the mortar in place with one hand, take the pestle in the other hand and using the rounded end press and twist it against the ingredients in the mortar. Grind, bash or crush all of the spices until they are all at the same consistency.
If you need to gently crush or bruise herbs or spices, gently roll the pestle across them in the mortar, this is a good way of processing garlic.
If you are not using the ground ingredients straight away you can store them in a Kilner spice jar or a clip top jar.
Top tip: if bashing or pounding ingredients, cover the mortar with your other hand or with a small cloth to prevent bits bouncing out.
